Leadership
You’ve heard of the inner meanie, that voice inside of yourself that tells you awful, unkind and untrue things, the devil on your shoulder eroding your self-confidence. We all have stories we tell ourselves, but the people who live a values-based life are those who know how to unhook from their stories and make choices about how they respond.
We are emotional beings, and as such emotions play a part in pretty much everything we do. However, when our actions as a result of our emotions are causing havoc in our lives, it can be a major problem. People who have a low Emotional Intelligence (EI) are often more reactive than responsive and they tend to always have to be right, are oblivious to other people’s feelings, behave insensitively, blame others for their problems and have emotional outbursts. Not surprisingly, they struggle with relationships.
Leadership, at the core, is about enabling the success and peak performance of others, usually in the context of achieving the broader organisation’s goals. It’s really difficult to lead a successful, high performing team if you’re neglecting the steps and actions that feed your own success.
Did you know that zest is one of our inherent traits? It’s a trait that has the potential to change our lives and those of the people around us. If you’re feeling like the pep in your step is more like a dull thud, the good news is regaining your zest is easier than you might think.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again- emotions serve a purpose. They exist for a reason. However, the incredible miracle that is our brain which gives us our emotions, also gives us the ability to mindfully and deliberately respond to them. Respond is the key word here and is vastly different to reacting. Let me explain.
The core of my work as a leadership and life coach is essentially guiding people through a process to enhance their performance, overcome their obstacles and roadblocks and shift to a life where the emphasis is on thriving rather than enduring. Heady stuff, is it not? While it can be said that I work in a relatively crowded marketplace, I have a unique approach to my coaching, a hybrid, if you will, and one that my clients tell me sets me apart from my leadership coaching colleagues.
What do a pilot, financial controller, kinesiologist and wellness and lifestyle educator all have in common? They each represent the roles I’ve held in my diverse career path. It’s this winding road, the path less travelled that guides and informs my hybrid approach to my leadership and life coaching consultancy.
This month's blog is a little different to earlier posts because this time, I'm sharing someone else's story. You'll hear about 'James' (de-identified for privacy), his experience with Time Line Therapy®, and the incredible results we achieved together.
Modern life is busy. We rush from moment to moment, rarely taking the time to pause and truly check in with ourselves.
I’ve had a few people ask me lately, what led me to Kinesiology? My answer — I had a deep desire to do more with the life that I was given.
Emotions
Emotions are an integral part of our daily lives, shaping our reactions and behaviors in various situations. But have you ever wondered what ignites those intense emotional responses within you? These emotional triggers can be caused by people, places, situations, or even comments. Identifying and understanding your triggers is the first step in gaining better control over your emotions and reactions.
Perspective. The very word itself indicates a view, a direction, and observation. However, like all things emotional intelligence it’s not fixed- we can shift our perspective, which in turn allows us to live aligned to our values rather than in opposition to them. This gives us the ability to live better, across all elements of our lives. Best of all is it’s easier than you think to shift your perspective and reap the benefits.
It’s not about me… As a mantra, never is this more relevant than when you’re parenting teenagers. Our children in general and teenagers in particular have the ability to push buttons we’d forgotten we even had, but when we unhook our stories from theirs’ and when we bring consciousness to the fact that it’s not about us, the quality of our family conversations and dynamics rise exponentially.

So, you’ve decided enough’s enough.
You know that self-knowledge + self-empowerment = a better you and you’re ready to make the changes in your life to step into your definition of better. Bring it! But before you do, have you put in place the structures and systems to support your change process?
Did you know that zest is one of our inherent traits? It’s a trait that has the potential to change our lives and those of the people around us. If you’re feeling like the pep in your step is more like a dull thud, the good news is regaining your zest is easier than you might think.

Humans are inherently emotional beings. We have complex brain structures that chemically respond to the situations that arise. However, the responses are a perception that may not necessarily reflect the truth or accuracy of a situation. While the fight or flight response saved our ancestors’ lives when facing a sabre-toothed tiger, this response is rarely appropriate in the day to day of doing the school run, going to work and just basically living our lives. When it comes to living a life we love, the role of emotions- or more specifically, how we manage our emotions- is key.
Are you controlling your emotions or are they controlling you? Emotions are not our enemy; in fact, they are there to help guide us in life. But when your emotions are out of control, it can be hard on your mind, body, and your relationships.

Authenticity has become a bit of a buzzword in recent times, hijacked as a marketing tactic, but this doesn’t diminish its power as a concept that embodies living our values. But before we can live our values, we need to be able to clearly, unequivocally articulate them, even, especially, to ourselves.

If someone had said to me that 2020 was going to be the year of staying at home and not physically connecting with friends and family, I would have laughed out loud at the absurdity of that statement. Well, as we all know 2020 has become that year and so much worse for so many people.

Self-Care
The core focus of my work as a leadership and life coach is helping people change their behaviour and change their life through self-empowerment and growth. However, without a generous dollop of self-compassion, self-love and self-kindness, people are limited in how they can step into their potential and live a better life, however they define better.
I believe that self-care needs a rebrand. Instead of being the domain of rose petal-infused baths or yoga on a cliff top it needs to be seen as the essential tool to prevent one of the most critical - and expensive- issues facing contemporary workplaces.
One of the biggest misconceptions about self-care- and most infuriating, might I add- is that it sucks up enormous reservoirs of time, energy and cold, hard cash. It’s simply not true! Let’s shift our thinking away from self-care being a self-indulgent waste of time to an essential tool for wellbeing achieved in mere moments.
Here are some tips to integrate into your daily life that will help you get through this next stage of restrictions.
Last week I had a client that found herself constantly in tears. This wasn’t a new thing, this was something that had been happening on and off years. It was never the big things that would start the tears, it was the everyday things.
KICK THE CHEMICALS TO THE CURB AND LIVE YOUR CLEANEST, HEALTHIEST LIFE.
The world we live in is full of chemicals. Even if we wanted to stay away from them it wouldn't be possible because those little buggers are everywhere – furniture stores, friends’ houses, shopping centres, petrol stations, schools, parks – you get the gist.
As parents, it's so easy to put everyone else's needs before our own. But what does that achieve?
Goal Setting

Are you one of the vast majority of people who set new goals alongside the new year and run out of steam before they have a chance to take off? You’re bursting with enthusiasm and excitement in the beginning, but as the months roll on, your motivation starts to disappear, and you just can’t be bothered anymore?
